on eagle was actually bald eagle on wires. i think i have an image here. area. oh so look at these guys, so this was taken in 1930s. and don't you know those children ended up in therapy at some point. i mean look at would you want to run into those guys anywhere i sure wouldn't and abort eagle unfortunately did. and what was interesting about the shooting of these eagles is that first of all, i did a search on newspaper dot newspapers.com from 1850 to 1920 with the words in quotation marks bald eagle shot and i came up with something like a hundred and forty thousand hits. and my research assistant and i we couldn't go through all 140,000, but we went through quite a few of them. there was very little repetition, you know newspaper reporting, you know, the same bald eagle incident and new the newspapers in those days did not these shootings whatsoever. and they treated them as if somebody had caught this large. bass down at the lake and in of course when they would report the weight of the bass, they always reported the wings

well, there was a note attached to this eagle, to the leg of the eagle, threatening the life of one of the wardens i supervised at the time. it was kind of like a message, you better leave us alone, or more than this was going to happen. so rather than give up, i started doing a lot of research, investigation and asking around, and i started getting little tips here and tips there, and i came up with two suspects and ended up giving these guys a handwriting exemplar exam where i tested their -- and then i sent off the handwriting to the fbi, you know, with this note. and the fbi confirmed that my suspects were the ones that wrote the note. and i ended up sending the feathers of this bird to the smithsonian institute. we did a search warrant, search warrants on both of their houses and came up with a lot of different evidence, different feathers and everything. so we ended up sending them off to the smithsonian institute in washington, d.c., and they pinpointed one speezs these were, and this was another example of that was some of the evidence went to the san francisco homicide forensi

they make personalized wooden canes with a bold and intricate bald eagle head carved into the handle for any maine veteran who wants one. i have some pictures here that show a ladies and gentlemen of the jury number of -- a large number of thecanes. as i noted when one of these canes appeared in my office recently this eagle has an attitude and he's positive about the future of this country. about eight years ago george and donna gunning from windsor maine, heard about a project in oklahoma called "the eagle cane project." the mission was to help post-9/11 veterans who had trouble walking because of leg disabilities due to combat-related action by providing them with a unique hand-carved cane. as a navy veteran georgia along with his wife donna gunning, who grew up in a navy family, were both immediately familiar with the sacrifices and difficulties that accompany military service. this project touched their hearts and they quickly recognized it as an opportunity to give back to veterans in maine. they brought their own version of the project to our state offering a personalized eagl

and so i remember the time i went to go visit the eagle office because there's an auto garage. there's one side of the building has like the big like engines for cars, basically. and so i went to that and just i was like trying to call jim goodwin, who was a paper. and i kept like i was like, i'm here. he was like, you know, you're not like, you're late. i'm like, i'm here. i think right there is an anomaly just on the other side of the building that he was at. and so he finally in, he's like, you're late. i'm i'm sorry but luckily he was actually really generous with his time and his story. and ultimately, it was jimmy really helped me understand how important the it was to this neighborhood. the oakland itself actually started in 1922, right after the race massacre and the goodwin family purchased, the eagle in 1938. and i've owned it ever since. and for me as a journalist researcher having access to that archive vital because you really get a good of both the sort of big picture civil rights that were unfolding and all that kind of stuff. but also just like day to day life.
